What to do while you wait
- If water is near lights, plugs or the DB board, switch off the electricity to that area at the DB board.
- Move furniture, electronics and rugs out of the way, and put buckets or towels under the drips.
- Take photos of the damage inside, and of the roof from the ground. They help us quote and help with any insurance claim.
- Do not climb onto a wet roof. Wet tiles and sheets are slippery, and old tiles crack underfoot.
- If part of the ceiling is sagging with water, keep people and pets away from underneath it.
Storm and hail damage
Highveld storms can lift sheets, crack tiles, bend flashings and block gutters with leaves and hail. After a storm we check the whole roof, not just the spot that is leaking, because storm damage is rarely in one place.
One honest note about hail: when hail packs into a roof valley it freezes into a solid mass, and the rain backs up behind it. No roofer can guarantee a roof against leaks caused by that, and we would rather tell you upfront.
After the emergency
Sometimes a quick fix is needed first to stop the water. We will always tell you whether a fix is temporary, and what the proper repair involves. Then we quote for fixing it from the structure out, so the same spot does not fail in the next storm.
