Roofs in Rivonia
Rivonia lies between the Braamfontein Spruit and the Sandspruit, and is one of Johannesburg’s most affluent residential and business suburbs. Before it became part of Sandton, with Bryanston, Sandown and Morningside, it was run by the Peri-Urban Areas Health Board. Strictly speaking there is no township called Rivonia: the area is made up of the original township of Edenburg and its extensions.
It is also home to Liliesleaf Farm, the scene of the 1963 police raid and now a national heritage site, and to Rivonia Boulevard with its shopping centres.
With homes and business premises side by side, the roofs vary too: pitched, tiled roofs on houses and flat or low-pitched roofs on offices and extensions. On flat roofs we check the falls and outlets first. On tiled roofs, the hips, valleys and flashings.
Worth checking on roofs like these
- Blocked outlets and standing water on flat roofs
- Cracked tiles on hips, ridges and valleys
- Flashings around chimneys, skylights and parapets
- Leaks in rooms below a flat-roofed extension
- Gutters and downpipes that overflow in storms
