Roofs in Roodepoort
Roodepoort grew up around the gold that Fred and Harry Struben found at the western end of the Witwatersrand in 1884. The town became a municipality in 1904 and a city in 1977. Its name means “red valley”, after the red soil.
The City of Johannesburg describes Roodepoort and its suburbs as mainly residential, with few high-rise buildings and plenty of new townhouse and cluster complexes. Roodepoort also still has a large industrial area along Main Reef Road.
So a Roodepoort roof could be on a house that has stood for decades, a complex roof shared by a body corporate, or a factory or workshop. On metal factory roofs the trouble is usually rusted sheets, loose fixings and box gutters. On complexes it is the flashings and joins between units.
Worth checking on roofs like these
- Rust around screws and laps on factory and workshop roofs
- Box gutters that overflow into the building in heavy rain
- Flashings between units on townhouse and cluster roofs
- A sagging roof line on older houses
- Waterproofing patches that keep being redone
