Roofs in Germiston
Germiston began as a mining town in 1886, at the start of the Witwatersrand Gold Rush. Simmer and Jack laid out the township near their mine and named it after Jack’s father’s farm, and the town took the name Germiston in 1904. The Rand Refinery, the world’s largest gold refinery, was established here in 1921.
Today Germiston is part of the City of Ekurhuleni and a major industrial centre, with steel, railway workshops, engineering firms and many other industries alongside its residential suburbs.
That means two very different kinds of roof work. In older suburbs such as Primrose, where a local history report described many houses and business premises as more than a century old, the timbers and fixings need checking first. On factory and workshop roofs, it is rusted sheets, loose fixings and box gutters.
Worth checking on roofs like these
- Rusted sheets and fixings on factory and workshop roofs
- Box gutters and downpipes that cannot keep up in a storm
- A sagging roof line on older houses
- Water-stained or rotten timbers in the roof space
- Old waterproofing patches that have cracked
