Roofs on Melville’s older homes
Melville was proclaimed on 5 October 1896 and named after the land surveyor Edward Melvill. It is known for older homes with Oregon pine floors, pressed-tin ceilings and wrap-around verandahs, and residents are protective of its historic character.
Older roofs have often been patched over the years, and patches on top of patches are where we find many leaks. A lot of our work comes from repairing the ‘repairs’: taking off the patch and going straight to the source of the problem.
Wherever possible we go back to the original methods of framework and sheeting repairs, using wood, metal, nails and cement. That suits an older house far better than layers of modern sealant.
Worth checking on roofs like these
- Waterproofing patches that have cracked or are holding water
- Rust on older metal sheets, screws and nails
- Leaks where a verandah roof meets the house
- Sagging or water-stained timbers in the roof space
- Flashings around chimneys and parapet walls
